The Chequers Inn is located in the small village of Goldhanger near Maldon, very close to the Blackwater estuary. The Inn dates back to the late 15th century and has remained virtually untouched.
The relaxed atmosphere and quiet surroundings make it the ideal venue to meet up and enjoy a delicious meal . They are renowned for their 'Real Ales' which includes: Flowers IPA, Deuchars IPA & Badger Tanglefoot.

The pubs name came about from its relationship with the neighbouring church and the collector of taxes. As early as 1600, the tax collector would use a board of black and white squares to assist in tallying up the monies brought to him by the people of the village who's property was owned by the church. As each person made their payment, he would place their coins on a square. Once every square had been filled, he knew his task was completed.

Today's Chequers offers customers a delightful setting in which to enjoy a superb range of home cooked dishes accompanied by a first class wines list. They offer a varied and wide choice of dishes, from a light snack to a three course meal in the restaurant.
